Philippe Cognée (born in 1957) draws his inspiration from everyday life by photographing the world around him, by using snapshots as a starting point for his painting. Moving landscapes seen from the train, restless crowds, alienating urban architecture, ordinary objects that surround him, carcasses or half-wilted flowers are among the themes he favours.
The artist creates his canvases with wax before subjecting them to the heat produced by the iron. The resulting liquefaction of the material creates a hazy effect, blurring the pattern and partially absorbing the subject into the material. Philippe Cognée thus disrupts our relationship with reality and questions the limits of figuration to reveal a universe as poetic as it is disturbing.
