This monograph is published to coincide with the exhibition Gérard Garouste: En chemin, on view at the Marguerite and Aimé Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. In addition to the paintings and sculptures that trace his artistic journey and influences, drawn as much from his own life story as from major sacred and secular texts, this monograph features numerous previously unpublished sketchbooks by the artist. These sketches reveal Gérard Garouste’s creative laboratory, his questions, his explorations, his study of Hebrew, and his engagement with the Talmud and the Midrash. “In their current form, from the moment they were numbered, my sketchbooks have become optimistic—that is, tied to specific projects: exhibitions, sculptures, series, installations, and theatrical productions. A sketchbook can last two or three years. It follows me everywhere.” Gérard Garouste
