In the Torah, a ‘break’ is not merely a wound or a rupture; it opens up a space where something can come to pass. It marks the moment when order cracks, when meaning eludes us, but also when a new interpretation becomes possible. Pierre-Henry Salfati explores this notion, in which narratives, characters and words carry within them fractures, contradictions and enigmas. The ‘fracture’ becomes a way of thinking: it separates but it also connects; it dismantles the obvious to make interpretation possible. Garouste’s paintings, gouaches, drawings and sculptures resonate with this idea. “The fracture is not an end, but an opening,” emphasises the artist. His universe, populated by strange figures and scenes imbued with both unease and humour, seems to emerge from a world where nothing is ever definitively fixed. A dialogue is created between the texts and the works; the Fracture becomes the very place where thought and questioning are born.
