This exhibition catalog presents a selection of paintings and photographs from the artist's new and old series. Deconstructing the traditional structure of the painting, François Rouan is one of the pioneers of contemporary painting in France. His work is now part of major American institutional collections such as the Moma and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This retrospective exhibition offers a selection of over thirty works, including wax paintings and photographic works in various formats - square, rectangular or oval - all created between 1969 and 2024. Once again, this ensemble reveals the artist's insatiable ardor for manipulating surfaces. Behind the apparent simplicity of the motifs and chromatics are hidden some of the artist's metaphysical and obsessive questionings, such as painting as a piece of art, the origin of the world, the image of the body or even the human existence.
